As part of their annual Health & Safety Week, Biffa Waste in Cardiff hosted a series of events, including a Sleep Awareness session delivered by URTU Learning to help employees understand the vital role of quality sleep for wellbeing, safety, and workplace performance. The session combined a Sleep Awareness Quiz with practical guidance from Liggy Webb’s Sleep Well booklets.

Liggy Webb is a wellbeing and personal development expert, known for her work in emotional resilience, stress management, and life skills training. She has written multiple practical guides and booklets aimed at helping people improve their mental health, relationships, and overall wellbeing, often in a workplace context.

In waste management, employees face demanding shifts, early starts, and long hours, making consistent sleep difficult. Drivers and collection crews are particularly at risk of fatigue, which can impact both personal safety and workplace performance.

As part of the Health and Safety week, URTU Learning facilitated a quiz session, prompting employees to reflect on sleep habits and common misconceptions. The quiz acted as a fun icebreaker and highlighted how sleep directly affects alertness and safety.

Staff were given copies of Liggy Webb’s Sleep Well booklets, offering practical advice on:

  • Understanding sleep cycles
  • Establishing healthy sleep routines
  • Managing stress and relaxing before bed
  • Reducing screen time and distractions

Sleep is essential for both personal health and workplace safety. The session by URTU Learning reminded staff that even small steps — like maintaining a regular sleep schedule, creating a calm sleep environment, and managing stress — can have a big impact on alertness, wellbeing, and safety.
