The way your brain works, in relation to being left handed or not, is very complex, but hopefully this simple explanation will provide you with an understanding of where left-handedness comes from. The brain is actually created in a “cross-wired” way so that the left side controls the right handed side of the body, and vice-versa for the right. Our handedness is connected with brain dominance on the opposite side!

Why are more men left-handed than women, and why do left-handers account for only one in 10 people worldwide? It is thought to be genetic and it definitely runs in families. No-one has come up with a definitive reason for why some people are left-handed, although during recent research it has shown that left handed people show a higher percentage of being dyslexic. This is because the right side of the human brain is the side that defines the left handed use. This the same part of the brain that produces holistic (picture) understanding which affects dyslexic conditions. Researchers have also recently located a gene they believe could “make it possible to have a left-handed child”.

Many left handed people are proud of their unusual handedness. And why not? After all, they have to survive, and thrive, in a world designed for those who are right handed. Is that why some become ambidextrous, by developing skills to use both left and right handedness? Hold onto the faith there are lots of famous left handers, and if you have that gene one or more of your children may be left-handed, whereas without it you will only have right-handed children!

The good news is if you are left-handed yourself you have the gene and may pass it on through future generations!
